Valentine’s day is just around the corner, and love it or hate it you’re going to be bombarded with plenty of people sashaying their way through your social media, with their heart balloons and chocolates. It can feel a bit much, we know. Yet if we strip it all back, the thing we are left with is ultimately a celebration of love, and that’s something we are fully on board with.
Love comes in all shapes and sizes, in different forms and fantasies, and at Positive Outlook one of the real loves of our life is bamboo. Yes, that’s right. Our green, leafy friend holds many a superpower, and we’re here to tell you why it should be held as one of your true loves as well.
Firstly, bamboo has plenty of features that make it wonderful to wear. It’s SUPER soft to touch, it’s moisture wicking (which means that if you sweat it draws the moisture away from your skin), its hollow fibres make it breathable and it’s thermoregulating (which means it keeps you cool when you’re warm and warm when it’s cool). There is also an antimicrobial bioagent called ‘kun’ which is found in bamboo and makes it naturally antibacterial. All of these things not only mean that it’s one of the most comfortable fabrics on the market, but it’s also perfect for people with extremely sensitive skin. Skin irritation is often caused by things such as too much moisture on the skin’s surface or friction from fabric, both of which are easier to avoid when you pick bamboo, thanks to the biological composition of the fibres.
Bamboo is also a super-sustainable resource. It is one of the fastest growing plants on earth and can regenerate extremely quickly after harvest (so there is a much smaller rate of depletion compared to other plants). It needs no help to grow from pesticides or fertilisers, which means that cultivation is always natural and does not harm the environment. Bamboo plants are also extremely effective in storing carbon (big tick for the environment). It absorbs twice as much carbon dioxide as trees, and generates a vast amount of oxygen (up to 30% more than most other plants and trees). Finally, it protects biodiversity and plays a crucial role in various ecosystems (the giant pandas, for example, rely on bamboo alone!)
One of the last things that's worth mentioning is that bamboo is highly practical. How many times have you woken up a little bit later than intended, only to realise you’ve not ironed any of your shirts and have to leave the house in a mad rush? Bamboo is naturally wrinkle resistant (EVEN after washing it multiple times), so you can wash and chuck on and go. Anything for an extra five minutes in bed, are we right? It’s strong and so bamboo clothing is naturally durable and tends to last longer than items made from alternatives such as cotton.
At Positive Outlook clothing, we are constantly working with our suppliers and industry experts to grow and improve our collections so that we can cater to everybody’s different needs and lifestyles. If you haven’t tried it yet, check out our products online or in store, because we can promise you, when it comes to bamboo, it will be love at first touch.
